ABOUT ABOUT

Buckle your seatbelt and put your tray table in the upright position as the PSO and the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra take you around the world! Join your PSO and the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra for an afternoon of family-friendly music and fun! Discovery Concerts are designed for families with children ages 4-12, but are enjoyable for all.

On Sunday, March 26, at 2:30 p.m. at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, our own Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra students will have a rare opportunity to share a stand and music with a member of the Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO). The adage, “a picture with worth a thousand words” is quite applicable when applied to the experiences student musicians will have sitting with professionals in a concert conducted by PSO's Maestro Eckart Preu.

The program will include Dvorak's Slavonic Dance #8; Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King," from Peer Gynt; Schumann's Finale from Symphony No. 4; Marquez' Danzon No. 2 (conducted by USM faculty member, Prof. Robert Lehmann; Price's "Nimble Feet" from Dances in the Canebrakes; and Williams' Raiders of the Lost Ark March.

The Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra is made up of more than 70 musicians, ranging in age from 11 to 18. Established in 1942, the PYSO has grown into a pre-professional program of high caliber, which challenges its members with a diverse repertory of orchestral literature. PYSO is conducted by USM Professor Robert Lehmann.
